Introduction

Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha area, located in Kolonna Electoral Area of Ratnapura District in Sabaragamuwa Province, covers an area of 240 square kilometers. Consisting of 10 Local Government Electoral Areas and 29 Grama Niladhari Divisions, these areas are home to several ethnic groups such as Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, etc. The main livelihood is agriculture, while self-employed businesses and government and private sector employees live in the area.
The urban limits of the Kolonna Pradeshiya Sabha are spread over 09 Grama Niladhari Divisions of Kolonna, Araporuwa, Wijeriya, Buluthota, Sooriyakanda, Maduwanwela, Kella, Ambagahaya, Koppukanda and within this urban limit, from Kolonna to Sooriyakanda town including Kolonna town and from Kella to Koppukanda town on both sides of the main road, our organization collects about 1.5 tons of garbage per day from public and private institutions, schools, temples, weekly markets, etc.
02 tractors owned by the organization are used to transport the garbage collected by the Pradeshiya Sabha to the garbage yard located at Madehenyaya land in the Welevathugoda Grama Niladhari Division. These two tractors have been instructed to segregate the waste at the point where it is collected, separating it into biodegradable and non-biodegradable, and the waste is already being sorted and transported to the landfill.
The compost yard has been constructed in accordance with the provisions made by the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils in 2021. Also, the machinery required for the compost yard has been acquired by using provisions of Rs. 2 million from the Provincial Council funds in the year 2021.
Accordingly, compost will be produced and sold from the year 2022 using biodegradable waste. Furthermore, a building is being constructed to store solid waste in accordance with the provisions received from the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government in the year 2023.
Thus, efforts are being made to carry out waste management activities in the area in a systematic and well-managed manner, utilizing the physical and human resources available to the institution.
