Maduwanwela pit
The Maduwanwela cave is located in a beautiful environment near the 14th milepost of the Embilipitiya Sooriyakanda highway belonging to the Kolonna divisional secretariat in the Ratnapura district of the Sabaragamuwa province. The land where the pit is located is a large area of about 20 acres. The beautified garden full of precious touches highlights the beauty around the cave. Decorated with three walls, the outer wall of the Maduwanwela cave is made of strong black stone. Its entrance is called “Stone Gate”. There are beautiful scrolls on both sides of the entrance and a stone arch in the shape of a dragon pantheon. There are two carved lotus buds on either side of the pantheon. It is said that there were three Pun Kalas near the previous one. The section connecting to the middle of the pit has beautiful scrolls and crude carvings. The inner wall is called the “Pahanpaura” and has a beautiful lantern design. Also, the cool water well that provided water to the cave, the remnants of the bath house covered with ceramic bricks, and hundreds of years old Kumbuk and hick trees proudly reveal the personality of the great nobleman who lived in the cave.
